Is there a difference between a midwife and doula?

Midwife

Midwives are trained healthcare professionals that provide maternity and gynecological care. They are responsible for the clinical care of the birthing person and baby.

Doula

Doulas offer physical, emotional and informational support. Birth doulas help you prepare prenatally, provide support during the birth, and early postpartum. Postpartum doulas support families transition into parenting, support with infant education, infant feeding, etc.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Families are welcome at all prenatal and postpartum appointments. We believe this is the birth of a family, not just a baby, so we love family involvement. Throughout your care we will discuss a plan to utilize all support.

During the birth anyone you want present is welcome. However we will discuss how to make sure your birth remains stress free and calm allowing the necessary hormones to flow undisturbed.

  • We carry emergency medication to manage a hemorrhage, antibiotics, IV fluids and Oxygen. We are trained in Basic Life Support and Neonatal Resuscitation. Midwives are known to often anticipate a complication before it is catastrophic due to the continuity of care with the client. Together we will discuss and create a transfer of care plan in the event delivery out of the hospital no longer becomes safe.

  • We will discuss options for a non emergent and emergent transfer. For non emergent transports we will discuss local hospital options. We will send records and give the hospital a report on your care. My role in the hospital is no longer your primary provider, but I will move into an advocacy role. we will continue to provide virtual and in person support. We will resume postpartum care once you are released from the hospital.

Emergent transfers are less than 1% and in this case you need to go by Ambulance to the closest hospital. In most cases we go via personal car in non-emergency transport.

  • Many PPO and cost share insurance plans will cover a portion of your birth cost but it can depend on your deductible. We work with a biller that can help you with an insurance reimbursement. We will run your labs using insurance and refer you to a location that takes your insurance for Ultrasounds.

  • All forms of payment are accepted

  • It is simply a location. At home, everyone comes to you and leaves your home how we found it.  At the birth center you come to our location. Home birth and birth centers have all of the same equipment available during labor and birth. Water birth is offered in both locations. Birth center can be a great option if you live in a rural location or would rather it be out of the home. There is an additional facility fee for birth center births.
