Julia Underwood Midwifery

I have been a dedicated birth worker since 2012. I reside in Southern California with my husband, two children, and our beloved furry companions. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Midwifery from the Midwives College of Utah and am licensed by the California Medical Board, as well as certified by the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM). To ensure I provide the highest quality of care, I engage in various continuing education courses throughout the year to stay current with the latest research and medical practices.

Many black birthing individuals and families face significant challenges, including higher rates of medical interventions and complications when going through the “traditional” birthing journey. Many are left feeling unseen by conventional systems that lack cultural competence and fail to offer the holistic, personalized support they need for a positive birthing experience. This disparity not only impacts physical health but also undermines emotional and psychological well-being during a critical life event.

  • Julia was an amazing coach especially through pushing. She was a calm, decisive presence that allowed me to focus on my body and bringing my baby into the world! My son had some trouble breathing at first and she was calm and collected, directing me on how to stimulate him and then eventually suctioning him and giving him a few "rescue breaths" with the ambu-bag. I am surprised in retrospect at how unafraid I felt during those couple of minutes; Julia and the whole staff around me were calm and reassuring. Once we were all settled in bed, Julia helped me get started with breastfeeding. Overall I feel like she was a huge factor in my birth being the beautiful experience it was, in spite of the hurdles we faced. She also encapsulated my placenta and dropped it off at my house, and she sat with us for a while to debrief the birth and just chat, which was such a comfort in early postpartum. HIGHLY recommend Julia if you're giving birth in the LA area!!

  • Where do we begin. Ms. Julia is truly a blessing and she allowed us to carry out our intended birth plan. We could not have imagined our labor and birth of our son without her. She is truly gifted at what she does. Julia was there to help explain what was going on, she helped us advocate for different positions and options during active labor and transition. She gave us extra strength and support, without taking over. She helped to remind me what kind of labor I wanted (natural and unmedicated with minimal medical interventions) and that I was capable of achieving it. When I was scared she and my partner were there together working as a team to support me. She was by our side the whole time and was attuned to us and our needs. We are so blessed and lucky that our son's first moments on this earth were positive because of her hard work. All of the positive adjectives in the world would not do her any justice and there are not nearly enough positive words to express how wonderful this woman truly is.
